Gex, over the centuries, and despite periods of unrest (revocation of the edict of Nantes, French revolution, German occupation, ...), has always retained essential functions related to religious, political, administrative or economic life, functions that contributed to its prosperity. GEX is the administrative capital of the Land of Gex.
Its population stands at 13,375 as of January 1, 2020. The city is home to the Gex-Nantua Sub-Prefecture, The Gendarmerie, the Public Finance Centre, the headquarters of the Gex Country Community of Aglomeration, the Gex-Divonne Rescue Centre, the Gex Country Hospital Centre, the medical care home and the immediate care centre in Gex Country, the Access point to the law, the Local Mission Oyonnax-Bellegarde-Gex, the Léo Lagrange Federation , one of the agencies of the Gex Country Tourist Board, the Gex Country Day Home.
Gex enjoys an exceptional natural environment at the foot of the Jura High Chain; it is also the gateway city of the Haut-Jura Regional Park. The city has the largest communal forest in the Department with 1770 hectares divided into four massifs: the Disse forest, the Turet massif, the Creux de l'Envers and Montchanais. The municipality develops, over a program of several years, the soft travel (walk along the Journans, historic route to the city center, several kilometers of bike paths and more reasoned: Citiz vehicles, charging stations for electric vehicles).
